April 10th was National Siblings Day, which means it’s time to reflect on some of our favorite brothers & sisters from film & TV. We’ll be examining the root of their rivalry, and the bonding moment that eventually brought them together.
Sibling dynamics are always growing and changing.
To celebrate National Siblings Day, here are 10 siblings from film & TV, their initial dynamic and how they inevitably bonded.
1. Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa (Star Wars)
Bonding Moment: Ignoring unfortunate-in-hindsight kiss, Luke and Leia have been on the same page since they first met. Within 5 minutes of meeting each other (they were separated at birth for complicated reasons involving intergalactic politics) Luke and Leia got in a shootout with stormtroopers, escaped a garbage compactor, and swung over a thousand-foot-drop. If you’re planning a giant galactic rebellion, these are the two sibs you’ll want to call.
Dynamic: Star-Crossed Rebels
2. Kate and Maura Ellis (Sisters)
Bonding Moment: Though Kate and Maura have their differences, when the opportunity arrives to throw an awesome party, they always come together. From the pre-party clothes shopping to the mid-party police smooth-talking, the Ellis sisters always have each other’s backs.
Dynamic: Partners in Partying
3. Jake and Elwood Blues (The Blues Brothers)
Bonding Moment: A trip to the mall is always a nice opportunity for some good ol’ fashioned sibling bonding. Unfortunately for other mall patrons, when the Blues Brothers roll into a mall…they usually end up decimating every store in sight.
Dynamic: Band of Brothers
4. Richie and Margot Tenenbaum (The Royal Tenenbaums)
Bonding Moment: One Winter, Richie and Margot ran away from home and camped out in the African Wing of the City Public Archives, surviving only on crackers and root beer. Their brother Chas was not invited.
Dynamic: It’s Complicated
5. Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont (Cruel Intentions)
Bonding Moment: Kathryn and Sebastian never really got along when their parents married, but that all changed when a certain bet brought them closer than ever. Arguably too close.
Dynamic: Creepily Competitive
6. Michael, Vito and Sonny Corleone (The Godfather)
Bonding Moment: The three sons of Don Corleone (the head of an certain crime family) grew up being told two things: always protect your brother, and never trust a Tattaglia. So don’t mess with one, or you might wake up one morning with a horse’s head in your bed.
Dynamic: A Bond You Can’t Refuse
7. Katniss and Primrose Everdeen (The Hunger Games)
Bonding Moment: When the mild-mannered Prim was chosen to participate in an annual teen deathmatch, bow-and-arrow-expert Katniss decided that she should probably step in and volunteer to take her sister’s place. It ended up all being for nothing, but it was still a nice gesture by the big sis.
8. Julius and Vincent Benedict (Twins)
Bonding Moment: For some inexplicable reason, people were having trouble believing that Julius and Vincent were really twins. A shopping spree for matching outfits helped fix that.
Dynamic: A Genetic Experiment Gone Wrong
9. Charlie and Raymond Babbit (Rain Man)
Bonding Moment: When the Babbit brothers hit the blackjack tables in Vegas, there’s no stopping them. And like many other siblings on this list, they enjoy donning matching outfits.
Dynamic: Recently Reacquainted
10. Brennan Huff and Dale Doback (Step Brothers)
Bonding Moment: Sometimes all two enemies need to settle their differences is to realize how much they actually have in common, like the same favorite dinosaur or a mutual love of karate.
BONUS: Jaime and Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones)
Bonding Moment: There’s no better way to bond with your sibling than by having an irritating, violently unstable child together.
Dynamic: Shamefully Close
