2016 is going to see the release of more superhero showdowns, Star Wars adventures, romantic trysts and comedic yarns. We’ve got 16 predictions calling how it all shakes out, from the hits to the flops and the products you’ll want from both.
2015 is done. We’re over it.
We are all about 2016 now, and we can’t contain our excitement for all the movies it’ll bring.
So we are going to be bold, pull a Babe Ruth, and call our shots.
Here are TheTake’s 16 Predictions for the Movies of 2016.
(1) The Force is Still Strong with ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’
In addition to an awesome director (Gareth Edwards of the Godzilla reboot) and an insane geek-out cast (Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen and Forest Whitaker, among others), Rogue One aims to continue The Force Awakens‘s push to make the Star Wars Universe a home for bad-ass female heroes with its star Felicity Jones (though Daisy Ridley’s Rey did set a very high bar).
(2) We Are Reminded How Much We’ve Missed Jason Bourne
We are pretty pumped for the yet-to-be-titled Bourne sequel. Jeremy Renner is out and Matt Damon is back in, Bourne Supremacy / Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass is returning, and 2015 MVP Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina and The Man From UNCLE) is even going to get in on the action. Jason Bourne may have amnesia, but we certainly haven’t forgotten him.
(3) Jake Gyllenhaal Sports the Must-Have Shades of the Year in ‘Demolition’
While Henry Caville walked away with this one last year for the sunglasses he wore in The Man From UNCLE, we really think this is going to be Jake’s year. Hes got the pensive look, the California local, and the perfect shades to bring it all together.
(4) You Love a Film that Involves Key and Peele and an Adorable Cat
Comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are leaving behind the sketch world to make their first starring feature. While Keanu Reeve’s John Wick followed a hitman getting revenge for his dog, Key and Peele’s Keanu follows two friends who are forced to infiltrate a gang to recover their stolen cat…named Keanu. Based on this image alone, it’s pretty easy to see why they would go to such lengths to save it – that cat is indescribably adorable.
(5) The Girls From ‘How to Be Single‘ Are Your Style Guides for 2016
This female-driven party movie has quite the fashionable cast: Pitch Perfect breakout Rebel Wilson and 50 Shades of Grey survivor Dakota Johnson are joined by Alison Brie (Sleeping With Other People) and Leslie Mann (The Other Woman) on their drunken expeditions into NYC’s night life. If you’re looking for party attire that’ll capture the attention of the entire room, these girls have your back.
(6) Super Hero Movies Go 4 For 5 This Year
2016 will see the release of five major superhero movies: Deadpool, Suicide Squad, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange and Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Superhero movies are always a pretty safe bet, but a certain amount of cultural fatigue is definitely starting to set in. We have a feeling one of these is going to tank. So which will it be? The risky R-rated Deadpool? The bizarre, mystical Doctor Strange? Or Batman V. Superman. Regardless, we’re watching all of them.
(7) …But You’re Still Going To Want Access To Bruce Wayne’s Closet
It doesn’t really matter if Batman V. Superman ends up being a bit of a mess. You’re still going to want access to the suave looks of Bruce Wayne – not to mention the eye-catching night gowns Wonder Woman wears when she’s off the clock.
(8) ‘Everybody Wants Some’ Does for the 80’s What ‘Dazed and Confused’ Did for the 70’s
Expectations are high for director Richard Linklater’s spiritual follow-up to Dazed and Confused (1993). While Everybody Wants Some probably won’t achieve the same cult status (to expect it to is frankly unrealistic), we have no reason to doubt Linklater will bring the goods – and that includes some gloriously tacky 80’s fashion.
(9) Melissa McCarthy Shows You How To Dress Like A Boss
Melissa McCarthy is the queen of playing characters with big personalities, and she may have found her biggest one yet in The Boss. The wealthiest woman in the world (before she gets sent to jail for insider trading), this business power player sports satin suits, designer sunglasses and a greed-is-good attitude.
(10) ‘Warcraft’ Continues the Video Game-Movie Curse, but ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Breaks It
As much as we want to root for Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie, director of Moon (2009) and Source Code (2011)) and his epic adaptation of World of Warcraft….that trailer was not very encouraging. The amount of CGI alone…woof. Assassin’s Creed, however, seems a lot more promising. With Michael Fassbender in the lead role and aided by Marion Cotillard, let’s hope this one finally turns out to be the video game movie worth seeing (sorry, Hitman: Agent 47).
(11) ‘The Legend of Tarzan‘ Makes You Want to Dive Into the Jungle
Starring a seriously beefed-out Alexander Skarsgard and bikini-enthusiast Margot Robbie, The Legend of Tarzan‘s trailer promises a vine-swinging adventure that’ll make you want to fly out to the nearest jungle for your next vacation spot.
(12) The Ghostbusters Reboot is Everything We’ve Wanted and More
An all-female Ghostbusters reboot starring four of the funniest women in comedy? Great. Directed by Paul Feig, the guy behind Bridesmaids (2011), The Heat (2013) and Spy (2015)? Awesome. Bringing in Chris Hemsworth as the overly-sexualized Ghostbusters secretary? Perfection.
(13) Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe Have the Best Bromance of the Year in ‘The Nice Guys’
Shane Black’s follow up to Iron Man 3 (2013) finds him returning to his buddy-cop origins (Black is the screenwriter of the Lethal Weapon movies). Based on the awesome first trailer, Crowe and Gosling are going to share some delightful – if initially violent and hostile – bickering sessions and action-packed adventures. Whether they become the next Murtaugh and Riggs remains to be seen.
(14) ‘The Girl on the Train’ is the ‘Gone Girl’ of 2016, Continues the Rise of Rebecca Ferguson
The much-anticipated adaptation of “The Girl on the Train” has a pretty impressive cast lined up with Sicario‘s (2015) Emily Blunt, Joy (2015) / Point Break (2015) star Edgar Ramirez and The Leftovers lead Justin Theroux. But the most exciting casting news comes with the addition of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) scene-stealer Rebecca Ferguson, who should become a household name by the end of the year.
(15) ‘Ride Along 2‘ Features Your Next Two Dream Cars
(16) They Find Dory
Unless Pixar is planning on making the darkest movie of their career…we’re pretty sure we have this prediction in the bag.
