GOWN UP: Three Holiday Party Dresses fit for Leading Ladies

Holiday party season: it’s happening.

And yes, you could slide into your LBD and start the eggnog-fueled schmoozing. But allow us to offer a few options a little more . . . Oscar worthy.

Here are three jaw-dropping holiday gowns from some leading ladies in film.

Please, hold your applause.

Julia Roberts Pretty Woman Red GownFOR THE LADY IN RED

THE MOVIE: Pretty Woman

This fire engine red gown by costume designer Marilyn Vance-Straker turned a call girl into a debutante. (Imagine what it could do for an account manager.) With straps that slightly fall off the shoulders, you’ll need to be working your angles. You’re exposed but just sophisticated enough to keep a deep v-neck classy. For your hair, keep it up to show off your neck.  (Now is a good time to perfect your Julia Roberts laugh.)

Kate Hudson Gown from How to Lose a GuyFOR THE GRAND ENTRANCE

THE MOVIE: How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days

If you remember one thing about this movie, it’s the dress. With a plunging back that stops right there, this glowing gown creates shocks and awe when entering a room. Go ahead, do a little spin, à la Kate Hudson. The Dina Barel creation will carry you from that black tie gala to the underground Karaoke bar—and when you get there, no one will be concerned if you can carry a tune.

Keira Knightley Green Gown in Atonement

THE MOVIE: Atonement

This stunning green dress got serious screen time until it was…um…removed. Costume designer Jacqueline Durran had to create a few replicas, since Keira Knightley and James McAvoy kept ripping it (accidentally, we’re sure.) After all, the straps are so delicately slender they’re almost invisible. But you won’t be. Warning: Only wear this backless dress if you’re ready to be the center of the universe. (Or your black tie soiree.)
