There’s never a bad time to have a cocktail.
But there are better-than-usual times, and the Oscars falls squarely in that category.
Maybe it has something to do with all the attractive people wearing attractive clothing. Or maybe you just want to recreate some sense memories to evoke those powerful emotional reactions you felt while watching the nominated films.
Or something else entirely.
But regardless, Oscars cocktails exist, so we tapped our pal at Cocktail Enthusiast to roundup a handful of award-worthy cocktails to drink during the ceremony.
These are they.
LIFE ON MARS
Straight from New York’s Roxy Hotel, this drink pays homage to Matt Damon’s role as the stranded astronaut turned vegetable gardener in The Martian. The movie was nominated for Best Picture, and Damon’s up for a Best Actor nod.
2 oz El Dorado 5 Year Rum
.75 oz Lime Juice
.5 oz Pineapple Juice
.5 oz Cinnamon Syrup
1 tsp American Fruit Sour Cherry Cordial
.5 tsp Ancho Reyes
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe. Garnish with a lime wedge.
This delicate, sparkling cocktail is inspired by The Danish Girl, wherein Eddie Redmayne portrays an artist facing the strict societal norms of the early 20th century while trying to undergo a sex change. Redmayne is nominated for Best Actor.
1/2 part St-Germain French Elderflower Liqueur
1/2 part Martini & Rossi Sparkling Rosé
Pour St-Germain into a chilled coupe, and top with Martini & Rossi Sparkling Rosé. Stir lightly. Float half a strawberry or garnish with an edible flower.
2 oz Caliche Rum
3/4 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz apple juice
1/2 oz honey syrup
1/2 oz Cointreau
1/4 oz orange juice
Add all ingredients to a toddy glass, then top with hot water. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a slice of orange studded with cloves.
GIN & JUICE
An ode to the Snoop Dog classic, this refreshing number celebrates Straight Outta Compton, which chronicles the rise of N.W.A. and hip hop culture. The film is nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
2 oz Bombay Sapphire Gin
2 oz grapefruit juice
3 oz orange juice
1 slice lime
Shake all ingredients with ice, then pour into a highball glass. Garnish with a slice of lime and grapefruit.
And finally, the Sweet Seduction, a cocktail to celebrate Carol, the smartly-acted film that portrays the budding relationship between characters played by Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett. Carol was nominated for a number of awards, including Best Actress (Blanchett) and Best Supporting Actress (Mara)
1 oz Bombay Sapphire Gin
3/4 oz St-Germain French Elderflower Liqueur
1/4 oz Aperol
1/4 os fresh lemon juice
Martini & Rossi Sparkling Rosé
Shake first four ingredients with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with sparkling rosé, and garnish with a raspberry or orange twist.
